From 15th to 18th April Yvonne Shashoua* went to Malta to give a course on plastics to a group of conservator-restorers at Heritage Malta.
Topics covered included:
- Historical development of plastics
- Chemistry and physics of plastics
- Challenges of active conservation of plastics
- New generation plastics in cultural heritage collections – bioplastics, biodegradable, reused, recycled and sustainable plastics
- Designing conservation strategies for plastics
In practical session participants worked on identifying types of plastics using non-destructive and destructive tests, as well as adhering, filling and cleaning plastics. Furthermore they worked on recognising, documenting and slowing the deterioration of plastics.
*Yvonne Shashoua is Research Professor at the National Museum of Denmark specializing in the degradation and conservation of plastics. She has more than 100 publications in this field including the monograph Conservation of Plastics-Materials Science, Degradation and Preservation, Elsevier, 2008.
