All organic materials naturally emit volatile compounds (VOCs). Objects as complex in composition as artworks can therefore be expected to produce a variety of emissions . Some of these compounds can be harmful for (other) artworks and for human health and thus need to be monitored. On the other hand, these emissions can be sampled non-invasively (using ‘headspace analysis*) and used to investigate the composition and ageing of artworks. This presentation looks at the identity and properties of VOCs emitted by various materials and objects and the possibility to use these non-invasively sampled emissions to investigate the composition and ageing of artworks.

Fabiana Di Gianvincenzo is a postdoc researcher at the University of Amsterdam. She has a background as analytical chemist and her research focusses on studying organic materials present in artworks, in particular paintings, using chromatography and mass spectrometry. In past projects, she has used these techniques to study oil paints, natural dyes used for wool and paper dyeing, protein-based paint binders, and the smell of museum objects. She is currently carrying out the PaintWatch project, a MSCA PF action (GA nr 101206991) aimed at optimizing headspace protocols that allow to non-invasively study materials used in the production and conservation of paintings, via their volatile emissions.
