This practical course, to be held at The Corning Museum of Glass, NY, USA covers the principles and practice of historical and archaeological glass cleaning, care, conservation and restoration. The course will be held in the laboratory surrounded by the magnificent Corning glass collection.
Discussions centre on aspects of deterioration, restoration methods and proper conditions for storage and display. Practical sessions focus on cleaning, reconstruction, adhesion and gap filling and the use of different techniques and materials.
The course is aimed at practising glass and other conservators and requires a background knowledge in conservation.
Day 1
– Introduction and objectives
– Laboratory Notebooks: literature/bibliographies
– Lecture: Using adhesives on glass: acrylics, epoxies. Preparation of B-72 adhesive. Tricks with epoxy. Removal of previous adhesives, paints, fillers, and restorations; use of solvents, techniques. Cleaning glass: mechanical, chemical, stain removal
– LAB Demonstration: Materials/supplies, tools, chemicals. Handling/Safety. Setting up a laboratory for the conservation of glass: materials/supplies, tools, chemicals. Microscopic examination, documentation. Object assignments to participants. Preliminary assembly: taping; using B-72 adhesive
– Practical Work
Day 2
– Lecture: Casting resins: clear, pigmented. Dyes. Loss Compensation: Direct fills, detachable restorations. Chemistry of glass: preservation/deterioration. Archaeological glass; conservation in the field: maintenance, storage and re-treatment of excavation collections, active vs. passive intervention. Ethics/aesthetics: Study, publication, museum display
– Laboratory Demonstration: Loss compensation: wax molding, plasticene. Moulding, silicone rubber moulding. Direct fills: single-sided, enveloping, two-sided
– Practical work: Assembly of glass; using epoxy adhesives. Begin backings and moulds for fills
– Laboratory Demonstration: Loss compensation, Detachable restorations: use of plaster, use of putties, Casting, coloring
Day 3
– Practical work: Continue backings, one-sided; two-sided. Silicone rubber molding
– Laboratory: Epoxy surfaces: mechanical cleaning, sanding, solvent cleaning, re-surfacing, polishing
– Storage Visit: Glass in storage. Photography. Lighting, Display. -Temperature, humidity; climate control
– Discussion: responsibilities of a conservator: interactions with curators/director
– Laboratory: casting fills
Day 4
– Laboratory: Restoration: gap-filling/loss compensation
– Lecture: Atmospheric deterioration (crizzling/weeping/sick glass). Symptoms, stages. Active/passive intervention. Climate control in storage
– Laboratory: Handling, Packing, Shipping, Individual projects
Day 5
– Laboratory: Trouble-shooting, correcting mistakes, Re-treatment (starting over), Finding help: literature resources, publications, Individual projects
Astrid R. van Giffen is Conservator of Ancient through Modern Glass at the Corning Museum of Glass, where she has worked since 2009. Her main research interests and areas of publication include the glass models by Leopold and Rudolf Blaschka, the deterioration of glass, developing new treatment techniques for glass objects, and most recently technical analyses of Chinese glasses. Before joining CMOG, van Giffen was the Samuel H. Kress Fellow in Objects Conservation at the Straus Center for Conservation and Technical Studies of the Harvard Art Museums. Van Giffen holds a conservation degree from the Netherlands Institute for Cultural Heritage (ICN) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands with a specialization in the conservation of glass and ceramics. She is a Fellow of the International Institute for Conservation and a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation.
